Oyster roasts
An oyster roast is a traditional type of Lowcountry gathering. Oysters are the center of attention, but the more considerate hosts provide chili and hot dogs, too. Oyster roasts are held in the fall, winter and early spring, when oysters are in season.
Private oyster roasts
Lowcountry residents hold small, private oyster roasts at their homes to celebrate holidays and special events, or just for fun. Some planned communities also sponsor oyster roasts for their residents.
Public oyster roasts
Local nonprofit organizations often host big oyster roasts as fundraisers. Admission is open to the general public, and the cost is anywhere from $10 to $100, depending on how elaborate the event is.
